Description
Eleocharis acicularis ‘Mini’ is a needle-thin hairgrass, roughly half the height of the standard species. It is what you plant between the base of a stone and the foreground sand so the hardscape does not end abruptly.
Planting strategy
Do not carpet the whole foreground — that is Monte Carlo’s job. Plant ‘Mini’ in bands along the stone bases and let it drift into the open sand. Divide the cup into small plugs and space them 3 cm apart; it will fill in by runner within six weeks.
Trimming
After the first month, trim it with curved scissors to about 1.5 cm. This forces sideways growth and produces the dense, mounded look in every good iwagumi photograph.
Requirements
Medium to high light and CO₂ for a tight carpet. In low light it stretches and yellows. It prefers a fine-grained soil — coarse gravel makes planting miserable.
Specifications
Tissue-culture cup, approximately 5 cm. Grown in-vitro, snail-free.
