Description
Malaysian driftwood is the practical choice: dense enough to sink immediately, dark enough to disappear behind plants, and structurally simple enough to work into a layout without a plan.
Why it is the beginner’s wood
No soaking, no weights, no drilling. Drop it in and it stays. The trade-off is that it has less of the wild branching character of spider wood — it reads as a trunk rather than a tree.
Where it belongs
Excellent as the base mass in a nature aquarium, particularly half-buried in aqua soil with only the upper third exposed. Also the best wood for attaching Anubias and Bucephalandra: the surface is rough enough that thread and superglue both hold.
Preparation
Rinse and place. It may darken the water slightly for a week or two. Boiling is not necessary and will soften the surface.
Specifications
Dense hardwood, sinks immediately. Typical length 20–40 cm, diameter 4–10 cm. Expect small natural cracks and knots — these are the features, not damage.
