Description
Powder-type aqua soil is the fine fraction of a fired volcanic clay substrate. The grains are around 1–2 mm, which is what makes it possible for Monte Carlo and hairgrass to send runners through it instead of around it.
Why powder and not regular
Regular aqua soil (2–4 mm) is better as a base layer because it allows water circulation and does not compact. Powder is a top dressing: 1 cm of powder over 4 cm of regular soil gives you the plantable surface without the anaerobic risk of a deep fine layer.
It releases ammonia at first
All aqua soils do. Expect an ammonia spike in the first two to three weeks. Either cycle the tank with daily water changes, or plant heavily from day one and use a bacterial starter. Do not add shrimp to a new soil tank.
How much you need
A 9 L bag gives roughly 4 cm depth in a 60 × 30 cm footprint. For a 90 cm tank plan on two to three bags; for 120 cm, four.
