Description
Spider wood is rhododendron root, chosen for the way the branches fan from a single crown. It gives you the thing that hardscape stone cannot: an overhead structure, a shadow line, and a reason for the eye to travel backwards.
What we do to it
Every piece is water-cured, sandblasted and inspected for soft spots. Knots that would rot are cut out. What arrives is ready to soak and place, not a muddy root ball you have to clean for a week.
It will float
Spider wood is buoyant for the first one to three weeks. Either soak it in a bucket weighted with a stone, or bed the base into the substrate and pin it with a rock. Do not drill and screw it into slate unless you plan to keep that slate forever.
Sizing
Listed length is the longest branch span. For a 60 cm tank choose 25–35 cm, for 90 cm choose 40–50 cm, for 120 cm 55–70 cm. A piece roughly two-thirds the tank width reads best.
Specifications
Rhododendron root, water-cured, sandblasted. Natural variation in branch count and colour from pale tan to deep brown. May release tannins for several weeks — harmless, and often desirable.
