Description
Nearly every good aquascape photograph has one thing in common: a bright, unplanted foreground. Cosmetic sand is what does that job, and ‘La Plata’ is a fine, uniform, warm-grey sand that stays put on a slope.
Technique
Lay it 1–2 cm deep over the aqua soil, and build a clear boundary — a line of small stones, or a hard edge where the soil bank drops. Mixing the two looks like an accident; a clean edge looks deliberate.
Keeping it clean
Sand in a planted tank accumulates mulm. Siphon it weekly with a narrow tube, and keep a planting tweezers handy to pull out the occasional runner that crosses the boundary.
Specifications
5 kg bag. Grain 0.8–1.2 mm. Inert — no effect on pH or hardness. Rinse lightly before use to remove fines.
